HEKS/EPER supports suffering civilians

War in Israel/Palestine

The escalation of violence in Gaza has resulted in devastating destruction, massive loss of life and a dire humanitarian situation. The death toll has risen to around 40,000 since the fighting began. The situation is desperate, with acute shortages of water, food and medical supplies. More than a million people are now at risk of starvation, and infectious diseases are spreading at an alarming rate. There is nowhere safe for civilians to go.

Since the start of the ground offensive in Rafah, more than 900,000 people have been displaced. They are sheltering in tents in areas with great levels of destruction and limited access to aid.  There are still far too few supplies reaching Gaza, and distribution is extremely difficult and in some places impossible.

Humanitarian response

Despite these challenges, HEKS/EPER continues to work tirelessly for people in need. HEKS/EPER has a country office in Jerusalem and has been working in the Gaza Strip since 2006, which is why it was able to launch its first emergency aid measures quickly after the outbreak of hostilities.

In the southern Gaza Strip, HEKS/EPER has been supporting the displaced civilian population since the beginning of the war with clay ovens for baking bread, water, hygiene kits, cash assistance, a hotline for psychosocial and medical counselling and psychological support for traumatised people.

Currently, vulnerable families are receiving shelter materials such as tarpaulins and ropes to build temporary shelters or improve existing ones. They are also receiving mattresses, blankets and cash assistance.

Our staff in Gaza work in extremely difficult conditions. They have been displaced several times and have just had to move to another office.  Projects are adapted quickly and flexibly to the ever-changing situation and needs.

In the West Bank and Israel, HEKS/EPER and its partner organisations support communities that have been particularly affected by the recent escalation in violence. We are also strengthening the civil initiatives of our Israeli and Palestinian partner organisations towards the transformation of the conflict and the protection of the rights of all people.

Our team on the ground is working tirelessly. They are doing their best to help those who have been displaced. We are monitoring the situation and constantly adapting our humanitarian response. While the situation may seem desperate, we must not forget the people in need.
