HEKS/EPER emergency aid for Ukraine reaches the CHF 10 million mark

Thanks to the great generosity and willingness of the Swiss people to donate, and to the support of partners in Switzerland and abroad, HEKS/EPER can now increase its Ukraine emergency aid to 10 million francs. HEKS/EPER is providing humanitarian aid for war victims in Ukraine, near to frontline areas in Donbass, in Transcarpathia, in Kyiv, and in neighbouring countries. HEKS/EPER is also supporting Ukrainian refugees in Switzerland.

HEKS/EPER has been engaged in Ukraine and neighbouring countries for many years now. Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, it was therefore able form its own emergency teams rapidly, in order to distribute relief supplies to the various hotspots and provide other kinds of support. While most other aid agencies concentrated their humanitarian assistance in Ukrainian-Polish border areas, HEKS/EPER opted to provide emergency relief closer to the battle lines in the south and east. Only a handful of international NGOs and UN organizations are present in these regions, and the needs of their residents are enormous.

HEKS/EPER runs a Coordination Office in Odessa and is now active in nine different regions in Ukraine (Transcarpathia, Chernivtsi, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Cherson, Kyiv, Mikolaiv, Odessa and Zaporizhia). HEKS/EPER’s emergency aid priorities are to ensure food security for people by distributing meals, provisions for travel or food baskets, cash for purchasing everyday necessities, distributing water for better hygiene, and ensuring basic supplies of medicines.

In Romania, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and soon also in Moldova, HEKS/EPER assists refugees in transit zones by offering background information, advice and psychological care. In addition, HEKS/EPER is helping these countries to integrate people who have fled Ukraine.

In Switzerland, HEKS/EPER advises and assists refugees from Ukraine in filing their applications for protection and in finding host families. Refugees also receive help with language, and are offered guidance in day-to-day matters.
