Do you need legal assistance?

Legal advice

Do you have questions about the asylum procedure in Switzerland? Do you need other legal advice? Or are you a victim of discrimination and racist remarks? HEKS/EPER offers legal advice and support in different fields. At the centre of our work are asylum seekers, refugees and rejected asylum seekers who have no residence permit, or people affected by racism and discrimination. They are all at particular risk of having their rights violated or becoming socially excluded.

For asylum seekers

Do you need help with the asylum procedure or do you know someone who needs legal advice? Through its legal advice centres in several Swiss cities, HEKS/EPER ensures that refugees can form a realistic picture of their situation. Lawyers advise asylum seekers throughout their asylum procedure. They file appeals when refugee status is at issue, when there are procedural errors or when a removal order seems unreasonable. When a negative decision is being appealed, the asylum seeker is accompanied and assisted until the final decision is made.

Asylum applications are submitted and examined at federal asylum centres. As a way of monitoring whether procedures are being conducted fairly and in accordance with the law despite the short time-frames, asylum seekers are provided with advice and legal representation. Asylum seekers remain in these centres for the duration of their procedure. HEKS/EPER has been mandated by the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) to provide advice and legal representation as well as interpreting services for procedures taking place in Eastern Switzerland (Altstätten) and North-western Switzerland (Basel).

For people in detention pending deportation

HEKS/EPER runs a contact point at the administrative detention centre in Basel to provide advice and legal assistance to persons who are subject to coercive measures. The contact point provides information in a professional manner and, where necessary, offers legal assistance or arranges for the services of a lawyer.

Racism and discrimination

HEKS/EPER operates an advice centre against racism and discrimination in the Cantons of St. Gallen and Appenzell-Ausserrhoden. This counselling service is aimed at persons and institutions that have questions regarding protection from discrimination, are affected by racial discrimination or accused of racial discrimination. Are you affected by racial discrimination? We would be happy to listen to you, take up your concerns and discuss with you the legal framework and possible ways forward.
